Yuletide Letter 2019
Nov. 4th, 2019 12:43 amAnother year, another Yuletide! I think this is my 11th year participating? I've lost track.
Anyway, hello dear author! In case we've never crossed paths, here's a little about my tastes. I love character-driven stories, missing scenes, in-universe AUs like different meet-cutes or paths not taken, angst with happy endings. I like gen pieces as much as romance. I'm more into het pairings in the fandoms I've chosen. Prefer stories that aren't heavy on the sex. Unrequited love, especially when the principals both know about it, can really be fun, too. My DNWs are non-canonical character death, fridging, graphic sex or violence, non-canonical politics, and coffee shop/high school/university/pregnancy AU. On to fandom-specific thoughts, likes, etc.
A League of Their Own (Dottie Hinson, Jimmy Dugan, Stilwell Gardner, Betty Horn) - All-time favorite baseball ship is Dottie/Jimmy, especially when their relationship revolves around the game. But you don't have to write a shippy story, by any means! Anything with these characters would be interesting to me. Dottie regretting leaving the league, years later. Jimmy going on as a manager without Dottie on the team, and what it looks like when some of his passion is taken out. Stilwell's relationship with his mother over the years, the story of how he gets the invite to the reunion at the Hall of Fame and how/why he decides to go. Betty, after the news about her husband, whether she comes back, how she views her time in the league as the years go by. Is she at the reunion and we just don't see her? Does she keep up with any of the other women? Baseball stories in winter are my jam, and I would love to see what you could come up with.
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (Juliet Ashton, Isola Pribby, Dawsey Adams, Elizabeth McKenna) - I went on a kick of watching the film every night for a week right after my baby was born in September, so I nominated it for Yuletide. While I like the book, I'm not really into epistolary style, which is why I nominated the film. Definitely ship Juliet and Dawsey. What if they manage to kiss before Mark comes to the island? Or Dawsey goes to London before Juliet goes to the ship? Dawsey arriving to break up Juliet's wedding to Mark. Just anything with them would work. I'd love more of Juliet's friendship with Isola, too. Stories about Isola generally would be fun! Then, there's the big AU - what happens if Elizabeth survives? Is it a case of Juliet finds out Elizabeth is alive and goes looking for her, and Dawsey follows? Or, Elizabeth is never arrested. Here's one - how Elizabeth meets and falls in love with Christian, Christian isn't killed at sea, Elizabeth goes looking for him after the war, you name it. Big, sweeping romantic themes here.
The Stand (Fran Goldsmith, Lucy Swann, Stu Redman, Larry Underwood) - I ship Fran/Stu and Lucy/Larry for reference. I'm wondering, what if any of these four meet under other circumstances? What if Captain Trips doesn't happen? What if Larry goes to Vegas instead of Boulder, and meets Lucy there, or Lucy follows him? A tale of a way paths cross before Captain Trips - Lucy and Fran at university, Fran at a Larry Underwood concert, Fran on a roadtrip that detours through east Texas and she ends up at Hap's. Lucy encountering Flagg years before the plague. Neither Stu nor Larry make it back to Boulder, and Fran and Lucy have to carry on. All sorts of ideas here.
Working Girl (Tess McGill, Jack Trainer, Katherine Parker, Cyn) - I was watching this recently (one of my favorite 80s movies) and it struck me how much some of what Tess experiences really hasn't changed. So, I'm thinking, why not update it for 2019? How would Tess and Jack meet? Would Katherine still be a HBIC with no female colleagues on her level? Wondering, too, about Cyn and Tess. How far back does their friendship go? Does Cyn feel left behind as Tess climbs the ladder? Keeping the story in 1986 or so, do Tess and Jack stay together? AU - Katherine comes back early, or doesn't go at all. How does it affect Tess and Jack? Also thinking about how this would go down without the fairy tale aspect. Do Tess and Jack ever reconcile if it didn't happen outside the elevator that day? Does the deal fall apart without Tess' insight, and Katherine is fired over it, or Jack is? Does Tess make a name for herself elsewhere and Katherine is in a position to beg her for a job, or Jack is?
The Defenders (Any) - My pet ship here is Matt/Jessica, but I'm cool with Luke/Jessica and Matt/Karen or Matt/Claire, too. If there's any ship, which there doesn't have to be! I'm most interested in stories about the Defenders in the aftermath of the events of Infinity War. Who was snapped out of existence, and who is left to clean up? Is it like it was with the Avengers, one of them is trying to do the work of those who are gone, being an organizer, etc? Is most of the gang gone, or are they all there, and find themselves having to help Hell's Kitchen and New York generally rebuild, or be defended against new threats? Or, what about the gang in the wake of Endgame - those who were gone are now back. Does it interrupt new relationships? What does it mean for Hell's Kitchen generally, and what role do the Defenders have with the world in chaos? Leaving aside the MCU, what about Jessica, Luke, and Danny when they are certain Matt is dead, and later find out he isn't? Dysfunctional team dynamics for the win!
